Athlone Institute of Technology

Athlone Institute of Technology (AIT) is a vibrant, contemporary higher education institute committed to academic excellence in teaching, learning and research. Home to 6,000 students from 66 nations around the world, AIT is located in the heart of the Midlands and is Ireland's top ranked institute of technology. AIT is on track to become Ireland's next technological university in partnership with Limerick Institute of Technology. Awarded The Sunday Times Institute of the Year in 2020 and 2018, AIT is Ireland’s top-ranked institute of technology. It sits seventh nationally in the official league which comprises the entire HEI sector, including universities.

AIT houses three strategic research institutes - Materials, Bioscience, and Software - along with two technology gateways (APT and COMAND) which drive market-informed research in collaboration with industry partners. The Midlands Innovation and Research Centre (MIRC), the institute's business incubator, also provides incubation facilities and business development support for knowledge-based start-ups.

The Bioscience Research Institute (BRI) serves and facilitates research across the Faculty of Science and Health, in the inter-related domains of agri-food, the environment, pharma/biopharma with biotechnology and health.

The SHE Research Group will maintain the values of AIT in the operation of the group, in all research activity, and all interactions, to ensure that each are characterised by excellence, transparency and accountability, partnership, inclusion and professionalism.

A Message from President Ciarán Ó Catháin

At AIT, we believe education and the acquisition of knowledge should be an enjoyable experience, and one that fosters innovation and critical thinking. We are also committed to recognising and celebrating the best-practice advancement of gender equality. The SHE Research Group represents this ethos and confirms our commitment, in AIT, to advancing the disciplines of sport and health sciences.

A Message from Máire Brophy, Dean of Graduate Studies and Research

I’m delighted to support the SHE Research Group. These dynamic researchers are bridging important knowledge gaps in sports performance, exercise and health, addressing the persistent gender gap in this research. This exciting research will inform teaching and help to develop the next generation of researchers with a solid foundation and understanding of the role gender plays across the disciplines. I have no doubt the SHE Research Group will become a model for excellence in sport science research and I look forward to their discoveries.
