Dr Aoife Lane, Head of Department

‘The Department of Sport and Health Sciences is a great place to study and work. Lecturers, support staff and students each contribute to a strong and vibrant unit with an ethos of support, respect, responsibility and fun.’
The Department of Sport and Health Sciences lies in the Faculty of Science and Health in AIT. The Department is home to five undergraduate programmes across the discipline of sport and health sciences. The two core sports programmes are Sports Science with Exercise Physiology and Athletic and Rehabilitation Therapy and the health science provision includes Nutrition and Health Science, Physical Activity and Health Science, and Exercise and Health Science.

There are currently approximately 400 students registered on undergraduate programmes in the Department. Each of these students take research modules throughout their studies culminating in a final year project in the last year of their programme. Each programme is underpinned by many principles including research informed learning and evidence based learning. In addition, each programme aims to develop graduate competencies around research to prepare students for further study on Masters or PhD programmes. Many of our current postgraduate students have progressed through the undergraduate pathway in the Department.
