The aim of this research project is to develop, implement and evaluate a recreational Irish Dance Program for adolescent girls. Adolescent girls in Ireland have lower physical activity (PA) levels than their male counterparts. There is a significant decrease in PA levels as girls transition from primary to secondary school. Girls face many barriers to participation in sport as they often feel they are ‘not sporty’ enough and don’t belong in traditional sports, leading to decreased sport participation. Dance is an alternative form of PA and sport that can be delivered in a fun, non-competitive, and social environment overcoming barriers these adolescent girls face. This research project aims to develop a teen dance program, implement, and evaluate its effectiveness. This project will follow a co-design element to ensure the voices and perspectives of the girls are being heard and understood.
